Our planet, its flora and fauna, is being seriously affected by our everyday economic activities. More and more companies worldwide, specifically those producing consumer packaged goods, have been exploring greener alternatives to reduce their carbon footprint. One of these alternatives is PCR or post-consumer recycled content. PCR’s specific properties are an excellent option and contribute towards a more sustainable future.

What is PCR or post-consumer recycled content?
PCR content, also called post-consumption recycled content, generally refers to material made from items consumers recycle daily, such as plastics, aluminum, metal, cardboard, and paper. Collection and recycling programs collect this waste and take it to facilities where it is sorted. In the case of PCR-PET materials, these are then washed and ground into flakes from which new items, including packaging and trays, can be extruded, and finally, thermoformed.

What are the benefits of PCR?
PCR content can be used in many ways and for many purposes: pharmaceuticals, confectionery, and baked goods, coffee, and snacks, among others. These finished products are flexible and can be transformed into rolls, flat sheets, or vertical bags.

Due to its physical properties, PCR content blocks light, oxygen, and other gases: fresh produce in PCR-PET packages is protected from light, is air-tight, and is therefore well preserved. PCR content is undoubtedly an excellent option for companies looking for greener materials to reduce their carbon footprint.

What’s the difference between PCR and recycled products?
Recycled products must be treated and processed to give them a new use. Once they enter the recycling stream, they are broken down into raw materials and sold to manufacturers. The great disadvantage of recycled products is that the benefits of this process depend entirely on the end consumer: to what extent are they aware of how and where to recycle packaging?

On the other hand, PCR products are already composed of 100% recycled materials and cannot be recycled again! Therefore, it is not necessary to expect the end consumer to recycle their packaging after use: this then helps companies to meet their sustainability goals.

LPET is betting on a more sustainable future!
We are leaders in manufacturing 100% recycled PET sheets, using at least 70% PCR content. We supply companies in Mexico, Canada, and the United States, facilitating a reduction of their carbon footprint and helping them meet their sustainability goals.
